Alien Resurrection Review

Alien Resurrection, 3/1/19, 69%, D+, 3 Stars.
The Alien franchise should not have been resurrected. This movie isn’t unforgivably bad, but is so pointless it just feels like a complete waste of time and undermines the ending of Alien 3.

The plot is average. It makes sense from beginning to end, and just kind of moves without purpose. It wasn’t horrendously slow, but it just kind of moves like it’s checking off plot boxes. The only thing about it that makes sense is Fox’s reasoning for this franchise’s resurrection.

When it comes to the characters, they were a bland group of mercenaries coupled with a Ripley clone. Sigourney Weaver does a good job of portraying Ripley’s clone, but they never really delve into the struggle of cloning ethics like the story could have. I honestly didn’t care that much for anyone, and interesting possibilities went nowhere.

The visual effects were better than Alien 3 though, with no hit-or-miss alien CGI, but other than that, there’s nothing extraordinary here. My bigger beef with the picture is the purpose of content. What does this movie add to the franchise and why did we need to see Ripley cloned aside from the fact that bad scientists would like to clone the xenomorphs because reasons?

The soundtrack was also average. Stuff happens, music plays.

As for dialogue, there was no personality to the characters, thanks to the complete lack of humor. There were some well placed swears here and there, but nothing that really gave the cast personality. Everyone must have been phoning it in, from the cast to the writers.
I give this unholy resurrection of what should have been a series moved-on-from 3 Stars and a 69%, making it a strong D+ for its lack of necessity to the franchise. It doesn’t hurt the franchise I don’t care too much about to begin with, but it doesn’t help it either. Some things are better left in the past, and the continuation of this series was one of them.
